How to setup an iPhone to control a Crestron system

Crestron Mobile Pro

With the release of Crestron's Mobile Pro application, iPhones and iTouch's will certainly have a big impact on the control of automation systems. They allow the user a touchpanel to run on their phone, the perfect combination of design and functionality. The following write-up will walk you through how to set up your iPhone and processor in order to run this application correctly.

Downloading Crestron Application

The Crestron Mobile Pro application is available through the Apple App Store, accesible from iTunes or the iPhone/iTouch itself. To download from the app store, touch the App store button, then search. In the search field type in Crestron. The cost is $99.99. A little on the expensive side, in fact, it is probably the most expensive app you will ever purchase, but it is worth every penny.

Setting Up Your Control Processor

Next, connect to your control processor with Toolbox. Select Functions in the top menu and select Web Pages and Mobility Projects. Click the Select Folder button, locate the folder where your iPhone project is located and select OK. Click Send to send it to the processor.

Configuring the Crestron Application

With your project loaded to the processor and application downloaded to your iPhone/iTouch you are now able to setup the application to connect to the processor. Select Mobile Pro from your iPhone/iTouch and you will see a systems screen. Click Add System. This is the system setup screen. For Location, use a convenient name such as Home or Remote, whatever suits your application best. In this instance we will be using Home.

The Host Name/IP Address is the IP of your control processor. It must be entered exactly as you would connect to it in Toolbox. The HTTP port is the port used to connect to the processor. Default, this port is set to 80. If you have adjusted the port within the processor, you will need to duplicate that here. If you are not sure, connect to the processor and check the ethernet settings. For this example we will leave the port defaulted to 80.

Finally, Port A and Port B are the ports assigned to the iPhone application. In the program, you will see this as settings within the iPhone module. Duplicate the settings you have there in these fields. The same applies to the Passcode. We will leave the Ports defaulted in this example and use crestron as our Passcode. That is it for setup. Press save to return to the systems screen, select the system and press connect.

Finishing and Notes

If succesful, you will see a progress bar on the bottom of the screen with status displays. First, the application will load the archive files. These are your pages, subpages, and other project related files. Second it will load the images from your project. The application will only load the archives once and store them, so each subsequent load will only load the images.

"For service reasons can I connect to multiple projects with one version of the app? This could be handy if I am at a place where I may not have my laptop but maybe take a look at some things."

For each processor you would like to connect to, you should create a new system. For instance, if you have one automation system in a main residence and another in a winter home. You would use two seperate systems for each home.

Testing and Troubleshooting

If you get the manifest file error, there is a problem with the setup. This could be the result of a number of factors. I will list the most common here.

1. Project Names do not match: Check the project name in VTPro and cross check with the module in Simpl Windows. These two names need to be identical. For instance, if you VTPro project name is iPhone Test.vtp, the name on the module should be iPhone Test.

2. Port Numbers do not match: Check the Ports asigned on the iPod module within Simpl Windows. These should match up identically with the ports within the application setup. If you are using multiple applications, each application will need two ports assigned to it. These must be setup within the router of the system.

3. IP address of the processor is not correct: Double check the IP of the control processor and make sure it matches within the application.

4. Password is enabled on the processor: This seems to cause an error with the application connection. It is not known whether this will be corrected or not, but the solution for now is to disable the processor password.
